EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Pathfinders - David Livingstone, 1922" showcases the remarkable Scottish missionary and African explorer, David Livingstone. Created by Frederick Havill, this portrait immortalizes Livingstone as the first European to discover the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls on the Zambezi river in central Africa. Livingstone's adventurous spirit led him on a quest to find the source of the Nile in the late 1860s. However, his journey took a toll on his health, leaving him seriously ill and eventually missing. It was not until 1871 that he was discovered by Henry Morton Stanley. Despite being found, Livingstone never fully recovered from his illness and tragically passed away in Bangwelulu, Zambia. Displayed at London's National Portrait Gallery, this painting captures both the determination and vulnerability of Dr. David Livingstone. The vibrant colors bring life to his story while highlighting his significant contributions as an explorer and missionary. "Bibbys Annual 1922" edited by Joseph Bibby features this extraordinary artwork alongside other notable pieces from that era. This book serves as a testament to British literature and arts during that time period. Frederick Havill skillfully portrays Livingstone's legacy through oil paint on canvas—a true homage to one of Scotland's most celebrated figures who paved new paths across uncharted territories in Africa during the nineteenth century.
