EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled "Philip V, King of Spain, 1700 (1906)", transports us back to the elegant world of 18th-century European royalty. Created by Braun and Co, this print is a faithful reproduction of the original painting by Hyacinthe Rigaud that resides in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The subject of this striking portrait is Philip V (1683-1725), who played a pivotal role in the War of the Spanish Succession. As one of the claimants to the Spanish throne during this dispute, Philip ultimately emerged as king but had to relinquish various territories to Britain, Austria's Habsburgs, and Savoy. Dressed impeccably in regal attire befitting his status as monarch, Philip exudes an air of authority and power. His long hair cascades down his shoulders with an aristocratic flair while a meticulously styled wig adds further grandeur to his appearance. The attention to detail captured by Rigaud showcases not only Philip's physical features but also highlights his position as Spain's first Bourbon dynasty ruler. This lithograph serves as a testament to both historical significance and artistic mastery. It allows us a glimpse into an era defined by political turmoil and shifting alliances while immortalizing one man who stood at its center - King Philip V of Spain.
