Pitmen encamped, (in Northumberland and Durham), 1844. Creator: Unknown
Pitmen encamped, (in Northumberland and Durham), 1844. The unfortunate dispute between the coal-owners and pitmen of the north of England still continues, with as little prospect of an amicable adjustment as ever. It is the longest strike (seventeen weeks), ever recorded of this important branch of our national industry; and its extent may be judged by the fact of 20, 000 of the miners petitioning for the interference of the Legislature...The owners of the mines provide cottages for their workmen near to the pits in which they are to be employed; these are granted rent free, and as the men refuse to accept of the terms offered them by their masters, the latter have demanded possession of the houses inhabited by the former, and numerous forcible ejectments have been made.... EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Pitmen encamped, (in Northumberland and Durham), 1844" captures a poignant moment in the history of the coal industry in England. The image showcases the dire circumstances faced by coal miners during the longest strike ever recorded in this vital sector of our national economy. The dispute between coal-owners and pitmen continues unabated, with little hope for a peaceful resolution. In an act of desperation, 20,000 miners have petitioned the Legislature to intervene on their behalf. This photograph serves as a powerful testament to their struggle. The picture reveals rows of tents set up by striking miners who have been forcibly evicted from their homes provided by mine owners. These cottages were granted rent-free but are now being taken away due to the refusal of these brave men to accept unfavorable terms imposed upon them. Taken from an edition of "Illustrated London News" in 1844, this black-and-white engraving transports us back to a time when industrial action was met with harsh consequences. It highlights not only the physical encampment but also symbolizes unity among workers fighting for fair treatment and better working conditions. As we gaze upon this historic scene frozen in time, we are reminded of the resilience and determination exhibited by these courageous individuals who dared to challenge oppressive systems. Their unwavering spirit serves as an inspiration even today as we continue striving for justice and equality within our own industries.
