EDITORS COMMENTS
Queen Victoria at Osborne, 1865-1867: A Glimpse into Royal Mourning". In this print captured by Edwin Henry Landseer in 1943, we are transported back to the mid-19th century and given a poignant glimpse into the private world of Queen Victoria. The portrait depicts the widowed queen in mourning attire, seated elegantly on her beloved pony, Flora. Her faithful servant and confidant, John Brown, stands nearby holding onto the reins. The backdrop reveals the grandeur of Osborne House, the royal residence where Queen Victoria sought solace after Prince Albert's untimely death. The clock striking three o'clock signifies a moment frozen in time - perhaps a reminder of her profound loss. On the ground lie scattered gloves and letters; remnants of a life once filled with joy and correspondence from loved ones. Two loyal canine companions accompany her - a Border collie named Sharp and a Skye terrier called Prince. Princess Louise and Princess Helena can be seen sitting in the background alongside another terrier. Their presence adds depth to this intimate scene as they share their mother's grief. This oil painting captures not only Queen Victoria's sorrow but also showcases Landseer's skillful portrayal of emotions through color and composition. It serves as an enduring testament to both personal loss and historical significance. Displayed within Osborne House on Isle of Wight, this artwork remains an evocative symbol of Victorian mourning customs while offering us an opportunity to reflect upon one woman's journey through grief amidst her reign over Britain during that era.
