A Quiet Evening on the Barrier, c1908, (1909). Artist: George Marston

A Quiet Evening on the Barrier, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration after an original painting by George Marston (1882-1940) the expedition artist, from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

A Quiet Evening on the Barrier, c1908

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures the essence of Ernest Shackleton's second Antarctic expedition. Taken by George Marston, the official artist of the Nimrod Expedition, this image transports us to a serene moment in time. In this breathtaking landscape, we see a camp set up against the backdrop of the Great Ice Barrier. The vibrant colors bring to life the harsh yet mesmerizing beauty of Antarctica. A group of men can be seen gathered around their tents, enjoying a rare moment of tranquility amidst their daring exploration. Ernest Shackleton, an Anglo-Irish explorer and leader of this remarkable journey, achieved great feats during his expeditions. In 1909, he and three companions reached Farthest South latitude at 88° S - an unprecedented accomplishment that brought them within striking distance of the elusive South Pole. This print not only commemorates Shackleton's extraordinary achievements but also pays homage to George Marston's artistic talent in capturing such raw emotions through his brushstrokes. Marston masterfully portrays both man and nature in perfect harmony. As we gaze upon "A Quiet Evening on the Barrier" we are reminded of Shackleton's indomitable spirit and unwavering determination in pushing boundaries despite insurmountable odds. This artwork serves as a timeless reminder of human resilience and our unyielding thirst for exploration.
