The Relief of the Western Party by the Terra Nova, 18 February 2012, (1913)

The Relief of the Western Party by the Terra Nova Off the Mouth of the Koettlitz Glacier, 18 February 2012, (1913). T Griffith Taylor, Frank Debenham, Tryggve Gran and Robert Forde, members of the second geological expedition, were due to be picked up by Terra Nova on 15 January 1912, but the ship could not reach them until over a month later. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

The Relief of the Western Party by the Terra Nova, 18 February 2012 (1913)

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This poignant print captures a crucial moment in the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott. On 15 January 1912, four members of the second geological expedition, T Griffith Taylor, Frank Debenham, Tryggve Gran and Robert Forde anxiously awaited their rescue by the ship Terra Nova. However, due to treacherous conditions in Antarctica, they had to endure an agonizing month-long wait before being picked up. The British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913) was not only focused on reaching the South Pole but also aimed at advancing scientific research in this remote region. The team consisted of experts from various fields including geology, zoology, surgery, photography and more. Unfortunately for Scott and his team who reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912 after enduring unimaginable hardships along their journey discovered that Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition had beaten them there a month earlier. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey, Scott and his companions tragically perished at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later along with their diaries which provided invaluable insights into their heroic struggle against nature's forces. This photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume II published in London in 1913 as a testament to these brave explorers' unwavering spirit and dedication to scientific exploration despite facing insurmountable odds.
