Remember!, 1888. Artist: Joseph Swain
Remember!, 1888. John Bull, the representative of the British people, looks at a map to find out the location of Suakin (Sudan). In the background, the ghost of General Gordon warns that if Britain is to continue to intervene to protect British interests in Sudan as a result of continuing trouble in that country, then it were best done soon. This draws on previous troubles earlier in the decade when Gordon had been sent to the Sudan. After he had been cut off, the relief party was not sent soon enough to save his life. The problems of Sudan were not resolved until 1899. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 15, 1888

Remember!, 1888
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a powerful and thought-provoking print by Joseph Swain that captures the political tensions of the late 19th century. The image depicts John Bull, representing the British people, studying a map to locate Suakin in Sudan while being haunted by the ghost of General Gordon. This allegorical figure serves as a reminder of Britain's past failures in Sudan. The print alludes to previous troubles when General Gordon was sent to Sudan but not rescued in time, resulting in his death. As John Bull contemplates further intervention to protect British interests, General Gordon's ghost warns him about the urgency of taking action soon. The haunting presence symbolizes both regret for past mistakes and the potential consequences if history were to repeat itself. Through this satirical cartoon, Swain highlights the complexities of foreign policy and its impact on nations like Egypt and Sudan during this era. The monochrome engraving adds depth and intensity to the scene, emphasizing its somber tone. "Remember!, 1888" serves as a poignant commentary on imperialism, military interventionism, and colonial aspirations prevalent at that time. It reminds viewers that decisions made by governments have real-life consequences for individuals caught up in conflicts far from home. This Heritage Image Partnership artwork preserves an important moment in history when politics intersected with tragedy. It invites reflection on how lessons from our past can shape our present actions and future endeavors.
