The Serbian armys 1915 retreat through the mountains of Albania during the First World War: The Commander-in-Chief (General Putnik) of the Serbians, although feeble in body and advanced in years, was possessed of a great and alert mind. Despite the fact that he had to be carried in a sedan chair, he directed the retreat with such consummate skill and generalship that he brought the Army safely through its awful trials more than 200, 000 strong. However some 240, 000 died from cold, starvation, disease, and attacks by Albanian tribesmen. From " The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. VI, by W. The Serbian Army General Staff On Their Retreat Through Albania, (1919)
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This poignant print captures a moment of immense hardship and resilience during the First World War. The image depicts the Serbian Army General Staff on their grueling retreat through the treacherous mountains of Albania in 1915. At the forefront is General Putnik, the Commander-in-Chief of the Serbians. Despite his frail physical condition and advanced age, his sharp mind guided this battered army with exceptional skill and leadership. Carried in a sedan chair due to his inability to walk, he steered over 200,000 soldiers through unimaginable trials. Tragically, not all survived this harrowing journey. Approximately 240,000 brave souls succumbed to cold temperatures, starvation, disease, and attacks by Albanian tribesmen along the way. Their sacrifice stands as a testament to their unwavering dedication. The bridge spanning across a river symbolizes both an obstacle overcome and a connection between past struggles and future hope. It serves as a reminder that even amidst war's devastation, humanity can find strength within unity. This historic photograph is part of "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects" by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. Its monochrome composition adds depth to this somber scene while preserving its historical significance for generations to come. As we gaze upon these courageous men enduring winter's wrath amid such challenging circumstances, let us honor their memory and reflect on their indomitable spirit in times of adversity.
