EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Shorthorn Bull Ironclad, bred by Lord Polworth in 1875. This remarkable animal was crowned champion male shorthorn at the prestigious Royal Agricultural Show held at Windsor. The Shorthorn breed of cattle, originating from England and tracing its recorded history back to the 18th century, has always been highly regarded for its dual purpose as both a dairy and beef animal. During the early 1800s, two distinct strains of Shorthorns began to emerge as breeders focused on refining specific traits for either dairy or beef production. Ironclad represents an exceptional example of this selective breeding process that took place during that era. The vivid colors captured in this oleograph chromolithograph bring out every detail of Ironclad's muscular physique and powerful presence. Standing tall behind a gate, he exudes strength and elegance simultaneously. This image not only serves as a testament to Lord Polworth's expertise in cattle breeding but also highlights the significance of livestock farming in British agriculture during the 19th century. It is a reminder of how these animals played a vital role in providing food resources such as meat and dairy products for sustenance. Preserved within this print is not just an anonymous creation but also a piece of history penned by J William Miles himself in his book "Modern Practical Farriery". As we admire this artwork today, it allows us to appreciate both the beauty and practicality that can be found within agricultural practices throughout time.
