Siege of Poitiers, French Religious Wars, 24 July-7 September 1569 (1570). Artist: Jacques Tortorel

Siege of Poitiers, French Religious Wars, 24 July-7 September 1569 (1570). The Huguenots under Gaspard de Coligny (1519-1572) besieged the city but the defenders held them off with the aid of heavy artillery and a small troop of cavalry, and by flooding the surrounding meadows. The French Religious Wars between the Catholics and the Protestant Huguenots took place between 1562 and 1598. The conflict ended when Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes, granting Protestants and Catholics equal rights

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense Siege of Poitiers during the French Religious Wars in 1569. The Huguenots, led by Gaspard de Coligny, are seen besieging the city, determined to overcome their Catholic opponents. However, with the aid of heavy artillery and a small troop of cavalry, along with clever tactics such as flooding the surrounding meadows, the defenders manage to hold off their attackers. The image showcases not only the brutal realities of warfare but also highlights the architectural beauty of this walled city. The towering fortifications stand strong against the onslaught while buildings within provide shelter for its inhabitants. This clash between religious factions symbolizes a larger conflict that engulfed France for several decades. The French Religious Wars were marked by deep-seated prejudice and animosity between Catholics and Protestants. It was not until Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes in 1598 that peace was finally achieved, granting equal rights to both sides. Through this powerful engraving by Jacques Tortorel and Jean Perrissin's artistic vision, we are transported back to a tumultuous period in history where religion played a central role in shaping society and politics. This print serves as a reminder of how far we have come from those days when religious differences ignited violent conflicts on such grand scales.
