Skua Gulls at the Ice-Edge, c1908, (1909)

Skua Gulls at the Ice-Edge, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time during Ernest Shackleton's second expedition to the Antarctic. The image showcases a group of Skua Gulls gracefully perched at the ice-edge, their stark beauty contrasting against the icy backdrop. Ernest Shackleton, an Anglo-Irish explorer, led three expeditions to the unforgiving lands of Antarctica. During his second expedition from 1907-1909, he achieved a remarkable feat by reaching the Farthest South latitude at 88° S, coming within a mere 97 geographical miles of the elusive South Pole. This record-breaking advancement marked a significant milestone in exploration history. Not only did Shackleton and his team push boundaries on land, but they also conquered Mount Erebus, one of Antarctica's most active volcanoes. Their courageous spirit and determination earned them accolades and recognition for their extraordinary achievements. Tragically, Shackleton met his untimely demise during his third and final oceanographic and sub-Antarctic expedition at just 47 years old. However, this photograph serves as a testament to his indomitable spirit and unwavering passion for discovery. The image is taken from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I written by E. H. Shackleton himself - an account that chronicles these incredible adventures into uncharted territory. It stands as both a historical artifact capturing an era gone by and an artistic representation of nature's awe-inspiring wonders in one frozen corner of our planet.
