EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Steamship Atlantis off Bathurst, Gambia in the 20th century. Formerly known as Andes, this remarkable vessel was transformed into a luxurious cruise ship by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in 1929. With its grandeur and elegance, it became an iconic symbol of British maritime history. During World War II, the Atlantis played a crucial role as a hospital ship, providing medical aid to those in need. After the war, it embarked on a new journey transporting British emigrants to Australia and New Zealand. This noble task marked its final chapter before being dismantled in 1952. The image captures the essence of Africa's West African coastline with its pristine beaches and vast Atlantic Ocean stretching out endlessly. The sight of this magnificent ship against such breathtaking geographical features evokes a sense of wonder and adventure. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece, we are transported back in time to an era when steamships ruled the seas and travel was seen as both glamorous and daring. It serves as a reminder of how transportation by water played a vital role in connecting continents and shaping our world. This print is not just an exquisite piece of art but also a testament to human ingenuity, resilience, and exploration that defined an entire industry during one of history's most transformative centuries.
