The Summit of Erebus, c1912, (1913). Artist: Tryggve Gran
The Summit of Erebus, c1912, (1913). Erebus is the second-highest volcano in Antarctica and the southernmost active volcano on Earth. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. The Summit of Erebus, c1912
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures the awe-inspiring beauty and treacherous nature of Antarctica's second-highest volcano. Created by Tryggve Gran in 1913, this artwork immortalizes an important moment in history - the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, Scott embarked on the Terra Nova Expedition with a team of skilled individuals from various scientific backgrounds. Their mission was twofold: to continue their groundbreaking research in Antarctica and to become the first explorers to reach the South Pole. After enduring extreme weather conditions and battling against time, Scott and his companions finally reached their destination on January 17th, 1912. However, their joy quickly turned into disappointment as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them to it by a month. Tragically, delayed by blizzards and running out of supplies, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were found along with their poignant diaries. This print serves as a powerful reminder of both human determination and the unforgiving forces of nature. It pays tribute to those brave souls who risked everything for scientific discovery but ultimately succumbed to Antarctica's harsh environment. "The Summit of Erebus" stands as a testament to Captain Robert Falcon Scott's legacy and his unwavering pursuit towards unraveling Earth's mysteries even at great personal cost.
