Surveying Partys Tent After A Blizzard, c1911, (1913). Artist: Tryggve Gran
Surveying Partys Tent After A Blizzard, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Surveying Party's Tent After A Blizzard" takes us back to the early 20th century and offers a glimpse into the final expedition of renowned British Antarctic explorer, Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), was an ambitious scientific endeavor that aimed to reach the South Pole. Led by Scott, this diverse team of experts included geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. Their mission was twofold: to continue their scientific research in Antarctica and to be the first humans ever to set foot on the geographic South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on 17 January 1912 after enduring treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies along the way, they were met with crushing disappointment. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month in claiming this historic achievement. Tragically delayed by adverse weather conditions and facing severe scarcity of provisions during their return journey from the pole's vicinity; Captain Scott and his remaining team members - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - succumbed to exhaustion and extreme cold at the end of March. Their bodies were discovered eight months later alongside poignant diaries that documented their heroic struggle for survival. This haunting image serves as a powerful reminder of both human resilience in pursuit of knowledge and exploration but also highlights nature's unforgiving might in one of Earth's most inhospitable environments.
