EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment between Tsar Alexander II and his beloved daughter, Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna. Taken in the late 1850s by artist Andrei Deniere, it offers a glimpse into the personal life of one of Russia's most significant rulers. Known as "The Liberator" for his historic emancipation of the serfs in 1861, Alexander II (1818-1881) was a progressive leader who sought to modernize Russia. However, his reign was tragically cut short when he was assassinated in St Petersburg by a bomb thrown by a member of the revolutionary group Narodnaya Volya (People's Will). In this image, we see Tsar Alexander II standing proudly in his military uniform with distinguished epaulettes while holding hands with his young daughter. The grand duchess exudes innocence and charm as she gazes up at her father with admiration. Following her father's untimely death, Maria Alexandrovna (1853-1920) went on to marry Prince Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria, in 1874. This union would solidify ties between the Russian Romanov dynasty and British royalty. Preserved from a private collection, this photograph is not just an artistic masterpiece but also serves as an important historical document. It immortalizes both the love shared within this royal family and their tragic fate amidst political turmoil.
