Valley of the kings tombs at Thebes, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood

Valley of the kings tombs at Thebes, Egypt, 1905. When the kings found that the pyramids no longer sufficed to protect the body of the royal occupant, they began to follow the example of their nobles and hew out tombs in the rock of the cliffs. The place they chose was this valley, and you can see the doors that form the entrances to their tombs. The custom began when the kings of the Empire took up their residence at Thebes. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the Valley of the Kings tombs at Thebes, Egypt in 1905. The artist, Underwood & Underwood, beautifully captures the grandeur and mystery of this ancient burial site. As we gaze upon the image, we are transported to a time when kings sought new ways to protect their royal occupants. The photograph showcases the impressive cliff face where these tombs were hewn out by hand. These rock-cut entrances served as gateways into the final resting places of pharaohs and nobles alike. This practice began when the kings of the Empire made Thebes their home. The barren desert landscape surrounding the valley adds an air of isolation and solemnity to this sacred place. We can almost feel ourselves standing amidst those who once walked these grounds thousands of years ago. Through stereoscopic photography, this image provides a depth that enhances our understanding and appreciation for this historical location. It allows us to immerse ourselves in its rich history and imagine what life was like during ancient Egyptian times. As we explore every detail captured by Underwood & Underwood's lens, we cannot help but be awestruck by both human ingenuity and mortality. This print is not just a glimpse into Egypt's past; it is also a reminder that even great civilizations eventually fade away, leaving behind only echoes etched in stone for future generations to discover and marvel at.
