Virgin and Child with Angels, c. 1460. Creator: Filippo Lippi (Italian, c. 1406-1469), follower of
Virgin and Child with Angels, c. 1460. This painting, produced by one of Fra Filippo Lippis many imitators in the city of Florence, is very close to the composition of the now lost central panel of the triptych commissioned by the Medici family in 1457. It was purchased by Mrs. L. E. Holden before the museums acquisition of the two flanking panels of Saint Anthony Abbot and Saint Michael. It has been suggested that this painting is a copy of the original lost central panel of Fra Filippos triptych of 1457

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork titled "Virgin and Child with Angels" created by Filippo Lippi, an Italian artist from the 15th century. Believed to have been produced by one of Lippi's many imitators in Florence, this painting closely resembles the composition of the lost central panel of a triptych commissioned by the influential Medici family in 1457. Acquired by Mrs. L. E. Holden prior to The Cleveland Museum of Art obtaining the accompanying panels depicting Saint Anthony Abbot and Saint Michael, this particular piece is considered a potential copy of Fra Filippo Lippi's original masterpiece from 1457. The artistry showcased in this tempera and gold on wood panel painting is truly remarkable. The tender depiction of Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus surrounded by angelic figures evokes a sense of divine serenity and maternal love. Filippo Lippi's influence as a renowned Italian painter during his time is evident through his masterful use of color, intricate detailing, and emotive expressions captured within each brushstroke. This print serves as both a testament to Filippo Lippi's artistic legacy and an opportunity for admirers worldwide to appreciate this significant piece from Italy's rich cultural heritage.
