War in Morocco - Arab and Moorish cavalry, 1844. Creator: Unknown

War in Morocco - Arab and Moorish cavalry, 1844. The Emperor of Morocco has not a part in his dominions that might not be taken by a frigate and two bomb-vessels in less than four hours. His army is a farce, and their mode of warfare perfectly childish...The ordnance is dangerously useless...the Emperor could at no time gather or hold together 100, 000 fighting men, and these comprising a host of such ill-fed, ill-clothed, ill-armed ragamuffins...From their bigoted habit of excluding from their country all Europeans, and from the little experience they have gathered of European war tactics, it will be some years...before they will be able to make any stand against the French...The annexed engraving will convey an idea of the Arab cavalry, the Emperors chief forces, against whom the French troops have to contend. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

War in Morocco - Arab and Moorish cavalry, 1844 - A Glimpse into the Struggles of a Nation

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant moment in Moroccan history during the mid-19th century. The image showcases the Arab and Moorish cavalry, which formed the backbone of Emperor's forces. However, an unknown creator from "Illustrated London News" provides a scathing critique of their military capabilities. The caption sheds light on the dire state of affairs within Morocco at that time. It highlights how European powers could easily overpower the Emperor's dominions with just a frigate and two bomb-vessels. The description further emphasizes that his army was deemed ineffective, their mode of warfare considered childish, and their ordnance dangerously useless. With vivid detail, it describes how ill-fed, ill-clothed, and ill-armed ragamuffins comprised this fighting force. Additionally, due to their bigoted habit of excluding Europeans from entering their country and limited exposure to European war tactics, it would take years for them to pose any significant challenge against French troops. This engraving serves as a testament to both the bravery displayed by these horsemen as they faced formidable odds while also highlighting the stark reality they confronted on behalf of their nation. It offers viewers an opportunity to reflect upon historical conflicts in North Africa during this era when colonial powers sought dominance over vast territories. As we gaze upon this image today through modern eyes, let us remember those who fought valiantly despite overwhelming odds – warriors whose stories deserve recognition amidst complex geopolitical struggles shaping our world then and now.
