Whites, London, 1891

White s, London, 1891. Whites is a gentlemens club, established at 4 Chesterfield Street in 1693 by Italian immigrant Francesco Bianco. Originally it was established to sell hot chocolate, a rare and expensive commodity at the time (and the source of its original title of Mrs. Whites Chocolate House). These chocolate houses were seen as hotbeds of dissent by Charles II, but many converted into fashionable and respectable gentlemens clubs like White s. From Old and New London: a Narrative of its History, its People and its Places, volume IV, by Edward Walford, pulished by Cassell and Company (1891)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the enchanting streets of London in 1891. The image showcases a historic building, Whites, which holds a rich history as one of the city's most esteemed gentlemen's clubs. Originally established by Italian immigrant Francesco Bianco in 1693 as Mrs. Whites Chocolate House, this establishment was initially known for selling hot chocolate - a luxurious and rare treat during that era. During the reign of Charles II, chocolate houses like Whites were considered hubs of dissent. However, many transformed into fashionable and respected gentlemen's clubs over time. This transformation allowed them to maintain their exclusivity while offering an elegant space for socializing among London's elite. The photograph captures the essence of this iconic club with its grand architecture and timeless charm. It serves as a reminder of how traditions evolve through centuries while preserving their allure. Edward Walford immortalizes this piece of London history through his publication "Old and New London: A Narrative of its History, its People and its Places". His meticulous attention to detail transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate the significance behind every brick on Chesterfield Street. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece, we are reminded not only of the opulence associated with Whites but also the cultural importance it held within British society during that period. This print is truly a treasure from Heritage Images that connects us with our past and invites us to explore the fascinating stories hidden within these ancient walls.
