Three witches, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham
Three witches, c1950. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Three witches, c1950" showcases the artistic brilliance of Shirley Markham. A talented creator, Markham's unique style was shaped by her studies at the Central School of Art in London under the guidance of renowned writer and artist Mervyn Peake. Influenced by esteemed British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden, she developed a distinct approach to graphic design and illustration. Markham's creative journey took her beyond the boundaries of London as she explored the Dolomite Mountains in Italy and sketched classical buildings in Rome. Her experiences abroad added depth to her work and allowed her to infuse it with a sense of wanderlust. Despite receiving accolades for her talent, Markham made a difficult decision to give up her promising career when she married in 1957. The societal expectations placed on middle-class women during that era compelled her to redirect her energies towards raising children and managing household responsibilities. For years, Markham's remarkable portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic until now. With this publication marking its debut appearance, we are finally able to appreciate and celebrate Shirley Markham's extraordinary contributions as an illustrator, poet, writer, and artist.
