Escalators JLP01_10_28901
Eldon Square Shopping Centre, Newgate Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. Two shoppers descending an escalator followed by a security guard in the H&M shop at the Eldon Square shopping centre extension in Newcastle.
Laing won the £ 5.2m contract to extend the shopping centre in March 1986 for completion in October 1987, a second contract in January 1987 to build the retail unit that bridges Blackett Street and connects the old with the new development and a third in May 1987 for improvements and upgrading across the whole Eldon Square site.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time at the Eldon Square Shopping Centre in Newcastle upon Tyne during the 1980s. Two shoppers elegantly descend an escalator, their reflections mirrored on its sleek surface. Following closely behind is a vigilant security guard, ensuring the safety of all visitors within the bustling H&M shop. The significance of this image lies not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in its historical context. Laing, a renowned construction company, was awarded multiple contracts to extend and enhance the Eldon Square shopping centre during this period. With a staggering £5.2 million investment, these improvements aimed to transform Eldon Square into a modern retail destination for locals and tourists alike. The H&M shop featured in this photograph occupies one of the retail units that bridge Blackett Street, seamlessly connecting the old with the new development. This section represents both progress and continuity as it symbolizes how traditional architecture blends harmoniously with contemporary design elements. Interestingly, this snapshot was taken on the day of Eldon Square's official opening by Prince Michael of Kent – an event that marked an exciting milestone for both Newcastle's commercial landscape and its community. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this image serves as a testament to urban transformation and architectural innovation while offering us glimpses into everyday life during that era.
