Southport Odeon NWC01_01_2554

Odeon Cinema, Lord Street, Southport, Sefton, Merseyside. The facade of the Odeon Cinema, with a fountain in a garden in the foreground.
The Odeon Cinema was opened as the New Palladium Cinema, a rebuild of a cinema of the same name on the same site. The facade belonged to the original New Palladium Cinema, which had been destroyed by fire. The cinema was renamed several times before becoming the Odeon cinema in 1962. It closed in 1979 and the building was demolished in 1980

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Norman Walley showcases the grandeur of the Southport Odeon Cinema, located on Lord Street in Southport, Sefton, Merseyside. The image captures the magnificent facade of the cinema, adorned with intricate architectural details that exude elegance and charm. In the foreground of this picture-perfect scene lies a serene garden featuring a beautiful fountain. The juxtaposition of nature's tranquility against the cinematic marvel creates a captivating visual contrast. Originally known as the New Palladium Cinema, this building was reconstructed after its predecessor suffered from a devastating fire. Over time, it underwent several name changes before finally being christened as the Odeon cinema in 1962. For many years, it served as a beloved hub for movie enthusiasts and theatergoers alike. Sadly, in 1979, curtains closed on this iconic establishment and its doors were shut forever. A year later in 1980, demolition took place to make way for new developments. Walley's photograph not only immortalizes an architectural gem but also encapsulates an era when cinemas were cherished picture palaces where people gathered to experience magic on screen. This nostalgic snapshot transports us back to the enchanting world of movies during the vibrant 1970s.
