EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Whiteladies Picture House, now known as the ABC Cinema, located on Whiteladies Road in Clifton, City of Bristol. Standing proudly at the corner entrance is its magnificent tower, showcasing the grandeur and charm of this historic cinema. Originally opened in 1921, the building itself incorporates an earlier terraced house and was once home to a ballroom and restaurant. Over time, these spaces were transformed into a public house and offices. The cinema underwent several name changes throughout its history; from ABC to Cannon and then MGM Cinema before returning to its original ABC name in the 1990s. The image evokes nostalgia for film enthusiasts with its mention of recreation, movies, picture theatre, films, movie theatre - all elements that have made this place a beloved destination for entertainment over the years. Its art deco design harks back to the glamourous style of the 1920s when it first opened its doors. In more recent times during early 21st century renovations took place briefly transforming it into a gym before reopening as Everyman Cinema in 2016. This photograph by Norman Walley showcases not only architectural beauty but also tells a story of resilience and adaptation through changing times. The blue hues add an extra touch of serenity to this remarkable piece capturing one of Bristol's most cherished landmarks.
