EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Tatton Cinema in Gatley, Stockport, as the sun sets on a bustling evening in the 20th century. The Tatton Cinema, located on Gatley Road, opened its doors in 1937 and quickly became a popular destination for local residents seeking an evening of entertainment. With a seating capacity of approximately 1,200 people in the stalls and circle, the cinema offered ample space for large crowds. The building was not only a cinema but also featured a restaurant, adding to the overall experience. As time passed, the Tatton Cinema underwent some changes. In 1971, it was divided into the Tatton Minor and Tatton Major Cinemas to accommodate a wider range of film offerings. Just a few years later, in 1976, it was further subdivided to create the Tatton Mini Cinema. The cinema's fortunes continued to evolve, and it was eventually purchased by the Apollo chain and renamed accordingly. Despite the changes, the Tatton Cinema remained a beloved institution in the community until its closure in 2000. In the photograph, we see a group of people gathered below the projecting porch and billboard, no doubt eagerly anticipating the start of the evening's feature presentation. The cinema's distinctive facade, with its art deco details and marquee, stands proudly against the twilight sky, a testament to the enduring allure of the movies and the role they played in the social fabric of the community during the 20th century.
