The castle, built on a rocky outcrop beside the River Tweed, was initially constructed in the late 11th century as a motte-and-bailey castle. However, the current keep, which dominates the image, was added in the late 13th century. The keep, with its square plan and massive curtain walls, was designed to provide a stronghold against invading forces. The drawing reveals the various components of the castle's defensive system. The thick, crenellated walls, with their arrow slits and murder holes, were designed to protect against enemy attacks. The machicolations, or defensive openings, allowed the castle's defenders to rain down missiles on attackers below.
