EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1936, offering a glimpse into the rich history of Lambeth, Greater London. Standing tall and proud in the foreground is the iconic shot tower of Lambeth Lead Works, designed by David Ridall Roper and built in 1826. This architectural marvel was once operated by Walkers, Parker & Co but sadly met its fate in 1962 when it was demolished to make room for the Queen Elizabeth Hall. As we delve deeper into this snapshot from the past, our eyes are drawn towards the left side where an intriguing scene unfolds. The old Waterloo Bridge, a testament to John Rennie's brilliance as an engineer, is captured during its demolition phase. This Georgian road bridge had graced London since its opening in 1817 but now stands as a witness to progress. The River Thames gracefully flows beneath these historic structures, serving as a reminder of London's strong connection with water transport throughout centuries. The waterscape presents itself beautifully on this sunny day in Lambeth while providing a picturesque backdrop for this riverscape composition. Preserved through time by Charles William Prickett's lens and now immortalized within this print from Historic England, this image invites us to reflect upon Lambeth's industrial heritage and appreciate how much has changed over decades gone by.
