EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the summer of 1950, capturing a pivotal moment in the history of Shoreham Cement Works. The image showcases the dedication and craftsmanship of the workmen as they construct conical preliminary mixers for the newly rebuilt works. John Laing plc, responsible for rebuilding this iconic establishment between 1948 and 1950, also documented their remarkable progress. In this photograph, we witness these skilled laborers fixing shuttering to one mixer while simultaneously working on steelwork for another in the background. Their synchronized efforts highlight both their expertise and commitment to creating a state-of-the-art facility. Established in the 19th century, Shoreham Cement Works played a significant role in West Sussex's industrial landscape until its closure in 1991. Today, its future remains uncertain, but through this historic image captured by Historic England's silver gelatin DOP print technique, we are transported back to an era when industry thrived along these shores. The juxtaposition of human figures against towering machinery creates a mesmerizing visual narrative that speaks volumes about Britain's industrial heritage. This snapshot not only immortalizes an important milestone in construction history but also pays homage to those who dedicated their skills and sweat towards shaping our nation's infrastructure. As we gaze upon this archival gem from Picturing England collection, it serves as a reminder of how far we have come while igniting curiosity about what lies ahead for this once-thriving site.
