EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6). The image showcases the Barn Bank Lane bridge, specifically Bridge 306, as workers diligently pour concrete onto the first of several massive post-tensioned beams. These beams, measuring an impressive 95 feet long and weighing a staggering 70 tons each, are being cast on top of the abutments and piers due to their immense size. The typed caption beneath the photograph provides valuable insight into this engineering feat. It explains that these colossal beams were challenging to handle, necessitating their casting directly on site. Once completed, this particular beam was stressed and became self-supporting across its span. This essential road bridge opened its doors to traffic in March 1962. This image not only highlights the remarkable scale of civil engineering involved in constructing such a vital motorway but also pays homage to the hardworking individuals who labored tirelessly behind-the-scenes. Their dedication and expertise brought this ambitious project to life. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this photograph serves as a powerful reminder of our nation's rich history in infrastructure development during the transformative era of the 1960s.
