M6 construction Madeley Heath JLP01_01_165_12
M6 Motorway, M6, Madeley, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. A view of the construction of the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6), looking north-west at Waltons Wood near Madeley Heath.
The work on the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6), between junctions J13 to J16 started in June 1960 and was carried out by John Laing Construction Ltd. This section at Waltons Wood presented geological problems for the construction team with an embankment failing when severe slipping occurred in 1961. By October 1963, remedial works on the embankment were completed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the M6 Motorway, specifically at Waltons Wood near Madeley Heath in Staffordshire. Taken by A© Historic England Archive, it offers a glimpse into the immense effort and challenges faced during this ambitious project. The Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6) was a groundbreaking development that aimed to connect these two major cities. The construction work for this section, spanning from junctions J13 to J16, commenced in June 1960 under the expertise of John Laing Construction Ltd. However, as with any large-scale endeavor, obstacles were encountered along the way. Waltons Wood proved to be particularly problematic due to geological issues that plagued the construction team. In 1961, severe slipping caused an embankment failure at this site, necessitating immediate remedial action. It wasn't until October 1963 that these works on the embankment were finally completed. This photograph not only showcases the magnitude of engineering involved but also serves as a testament to human resilience and determination in overcoming adversity. The image depicts workers diligently striving towards their goal against all odds. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time from the 1960s, let us appreciate both the historical significance and collective efforts behind such infrastructure projects that continue to shape our modern world today.
