M6 Motorway, M6, Madeley, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. A view of the construction of the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6), looking north-west at Waltons Wood near Madeley Heath.
The work on the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6), between junctions J13 to J16 started in June 1960 and was carried out by John Laing Construction Ltd. This section at Waltons Wood presented geological problems for the construction team with an embankment failing when severe slipping occurred in 1961. By October 1963, remedial works on the embankment were completed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the construction of the iconic M6 Motorway, specifically at Waltons Wood near Madeley Heath in Staffordshire. Taken by A© Historic England Archive, this image provides a glimpse into the immense civil engineering project that was undertaken by John Laing Construction Ltd in the 1960s. The Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6) was a monumental endeavor that began in June 1960 and spanned several junctions, including J13 to J16. However, it wasn't without its challenges. The section at Waltons Wood presented significant geological obstacles for the construction team. In 1961, severe slipping caused an embankment failure, which required extensive remedial works to be carried out. Despite these setbacks, progress prevailed as dump trucks and cars can be seen diligently working on the road's development in this photograph. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination when faced with complex engineering problems. Today, we often take our well-connected motorways for granted; however, images like this remind us of the incredible effort put forth by countless individuals who paved the way for modern transportation infrastructure. This snapshot from history not only showcases impressive construction techniques but also highlights how far we've come since those early days of building our nation's vital road networks.
