EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the early stages of construction for the iconic Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6). Taken in Stafford, Staffordshire, it showcases two determined men diligently felling trees on a piece of land that would soon become part of Section A of this major highway. The image exudes a sense of purpose as these lumberjacks work tirelessly amidst a picturesque woodland backdrop. Armed with chainsaws, they skillfully navigate through the dense forest, clearing the way for progress. The juxtaposition between nature's beauty and man's intervention is striking. In June 1960, John Laing Construction Ltd embarked on this ambitious project that aimed to connect Birmingham and Preston. This particular section spanned over 5 miles between Dunston and Whitgreave. It was an undertaking that required immense dedication and expertise from all involved. As we gaze upon this photograph today, we are reminded of the tremendous effort put forth by countless individuals who shaped our modern transportation infrastructure. Their hard work laid the foundation for improved connectivity and economic growth across regions. This remarkable image from Historic England Archive serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in transforming landscapes for progress while preserving glimpses into our past.
