Assembling beams JLP01_08_053121
COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL, GEDLING ROAD, ARNOLD, GEDLING, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. Workers assembling Laingspan beams from individual concrete elements during the construction of Arnold County High School.
Work began on the site in March 1958 and construction was completed for the new school term in September 1959. Laingspan was a flexible modular system of frame construction using precast pre-stressed concrete units. Laing developed the system in conjunction with the Architects and Buildings Branch of the Ministry of Education and consulting engineer A J Harris. The Arnold school was the first building for which the system was used beyond a prototype extension to Laings own Research and Development Centre. Designed to economise on steel consumption and minimise on wet trades to speed up construction, the system went on to be used for other building types including offices and hospitals

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Arnold County High School in Nottinghamshire. The image showcases workers diligently assembling Laingspan beams, a revolutionary modular system of frame construction using precast pre-stressed concrete units. The construction project commenced in March 1958 and was successfully completed just in time for the new school term in September 1959. This pioneering building became the first to utilize the Laingspan system beyond its initial prototype stage at Laing's Research and Development Centre. Laingspan aimed to optimize steel consumption while minimizing reliance on wet trades, thereby expediting the overall construction process. Developed collaboratively by Laing, the Architects and Buildings Branch of the Ministry of Education, and consulting engineer A J Harris, this innovative system soon found application not only in educational institutions like Arnold County High School but also across various other building types such as offices and hospitals. This photograph provides a glimpse into both the hard work put forth by these dedicated laborers as well as their contribution towards advancing architectural techniques during that era. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and serves as an important historical document showcasing progress within education infrastructure during the 1950s.
