COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL, GEDLING ROAD, ARNOLD, GEDLING, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. Concrete blocks set between Laingspan beams to form the floor surface of an upper storey at Arnold County High School.
Work began on the site in March 1958 and construction was completed for the new school term in September 1959. Laingspan was a flexible modular system of frame construction using precast pre-stressed concrete units. Laing developed the system in conjunction with the Architects and Buildings Branch of the Ministry of Education and consulting engineer A J Harris. The Arnold school was the first building for which the system was used beyond a prototype extension to Laings own Research and Development Centre. Designed to economise on steel consumption and minimise on wet trades to speed up construction, the system went on to be used for other building types including offices and hospitals

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the innovative floor panels of Arnold County High School in Nottinghamshire. The image captures the intricate arrangement of concrete blocks set between Laingspan beams, forming the surface of an upper storey. The construction of this remarkable school began in March 1958 and was completed just in time for the new school term in September 1959. Laingspan, a flexible modular system developed by Laing Construction, revolutionized frame construction using precast pre-stressed concrete units. Collaborating with the Architects and Buildings Branch of the Ministry of Education and consulting engineer A J Harris, Laing successfully implemented this cutting-edge system beyond its prototype stage. Designed to optimize steel consumption and expedite construction by minimizing wet trades, this pioneering technique became widely adopted for various building types including offices and hospitals. The significance of Arnold County High School lies not only in its architectural prowess but also as a testament to educational progress during the 1950s. This photograph from Historic England Archive provides a glimpse into an era when innovation played a vital role in shaping our education system.
