EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a bygone era in education. The School courtyard at Arnold County High School, located in Nottinghamshire, is showcased from a unique perspective. Taken from the south-east corner, the image showcases the school's main courtyard with its distinctive hexagonal paving and beautifully raised flower beds in the foreground. The historical significance of this educational institution cannot be understated. Construction on this co-educational grammar school began in March 1958 and was completed just in time for the new school term in September 1959. With an impressive capacity to accommodate 720 pupils, it stood as a symbol of progress and opportunity during post-war Britain. However, as times changed, so did educational needs. In the mid-1960s, another nearby school was built which ultimately led to their amalgamation into a comprehensive establishment by 1974. Sadly, despite its architectural charm and rich history, these Laing-built structures were eventually demolished in 2017. This print serves as both a visual testament to an important chapter in local education history and a reminder that change is inevitable even within our most cherished institutions. It stands as an ode to angular modern architecture prevalent during the 1950s while also capturing moments of youthful energy that once filled these hallowed halls.
