Wills factory complex JLP01_10_05422

WD AND HO WILLS, WHITCHURCH LANE, CITY OF BRISTOL. An oblique aerial view of the Wills tobacco factory at Hartcliffe, Bristol, from the north west, showing both the factory building itself and the office block and amenities complex.
The factory building itself was demolished in 1999 and the site is now occupied by a retail park but the office block and podium amenities complex were listed at Grade II in 2000 and converted into flats by Urban Splash in around 2007

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view captures the iconic Wills tobacco factory complex in all its glory. Located in Hartcliffe, Bristol, this photograph showcases both the impressive factory building and the adjacent office block and amenities complex. The factory itself, unfortunately, met its demise in 1999 and has since been replaced by a bustling retail park. However, the office block and podium amenities complex have stood the test of time and were recognized for their architectural significance when they were listed at Grade II in 2000. The image provides a glimpse into Bristol's industrial past during the 1970s when tobacco manufacturing was at its peak. The sprawling factory grounds exude an air of productivity and innovation that characterized this era. From this vantage point, one can appreciate the scale of operations that took place within these walls. Today, thanks to Urban Splash's visionary conversion project around 2007, these historic buildings have found new life as residential flats. Preserving their original charm while incorporating modern comforts has breathed fresh vitality into this once-thriving hub of industry. As we admire this photograph captured by Joh from Historic England Archive, it serves as a reminder of how our urban landscapes evolve over time – old industries making way for new ventures while still honoring our architectural heritage.
