Roman signal station 24932_039

OLD BURROW, Countisbury, Devon. Aerial view. Roman fortlet and signal station overlooking the Bristol Channel near Lynmouth, Exmoor. Probably built in about 51 AD/CE to monitor sea traffic and as a beacon to pass messages along the coast. The active life of this facility probably lasted only a few years from shortly after the Roman invasion until the occupation of South Wales. The earthworks are still quite prominent

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view captures the remnants of the Roman signal station and fortlet known as "Old Burrow" in Countisbury, Devon. Perched high above the Bristol Channel near Lynmouth, Exmoor, this ancient structure served a crucial role in monitoring sea traffic and relaying messages along the coast during its active years from around 51 AD/CE. Built shortly after the Roman invasion, this strategic facility played an instrumental part in safeguarding these shores until South Wales was occupied. The earthworks seen here are a testament to its enduring presence throughout history. Damian Grady's expertly captured photograph showcases the impressive scale of Old Burrow's remains. From this vantage point, one can truly appreciate how it commanded panoramic views over both land and sea. The rugged coastal landscape serves as a dramatic backdrop for these archaeological wonders that have stood the test of time. While only used for a few short years during its operational lifespan, Old Burrow continues to leave an indelible mark on our understanding of Roman occupation in this region. Its prominent earthworks stand as silent witnesses to centuries gone by—a tangible link between past civilizations and our present-day fascination with their achievements.
