EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the solemn beauty of the City of London War Memorial, standing proudly outside the portico of the Royal Exchange in Cornhill, London. The east face of this magnificent memorial is depicted here, adorned with an inscription that lists the regiments from the area who bravely served during World War I. Unveiled on November 12th, 1920 by HRH the Duke of York, this memorial stands as a poignant reminder of those servicemen from the City of London who made the ultimate sacrifice during one of history's most devastating conflicts. It was funded through generous donations raised during Colonel The Right Honourable Sir Horace Brooks Marshall's mayoralty and commissioned by him to be photographed by Bedford Lemere and Company. The photograph beautifully captures both the grandeur and intricacy of this commemorative sculpture. Its imposing presence against a backdrop steeped in history evokes a sense of reverence and gratitude for those who fought valiantly for their country. Adolphe Augustus Boucher skillfully conveys not only architectural details but also manages to capture an intangible atmosphere that speaks volumes about remembrance and honor. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded not only of past sacrifices but also encouraged to reflect on our duty to remember those who have given so much for our freedom. This print serves as a timeless tribute to all those affected by war while preserving an important piece of history for generations to come.
