Eldon Garden JLP01_10_38132

Eldon Garden, Percy Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. The central three storey atrium of the shopping centre at Eldon Garden, from the top of an escalator, showing palm trees and plants trailing from balconies
The Eldon Garden shopping centre was a development of 42 shops over 3 storeys and a 477 space carpark. Laing secured the £ 11.5m management contract for the construction in 1987 for Greycoat Shopping Plc. Work began in January 1988 and the centre was open to the public from March 1989 and officially open by Princess Margaret in November 1989. The development had to incorporate the existing pub, now called the Three Bulls Heads. The pub was underpinned and supported whilst its roof was removed and rebuilt so that it was structurally independent of the shopping centre. Eldon Garden is linked to the Eldon Square shopping centre by a 2 storey glazed mall that bridges Percy Street, this had to be constructed overnight when the road could be closed.
A cropped version of this photograph was used in the March 1990 issue of Team Spirit, the Laing company newsletter

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Eldon Garden, a bustling shopping centre located in Newcastle upon Tyne. The image showcases the central three-storey atrium, as seen from the top of an escalator. Lush palm trees and vibrant plants trail gracefully from balconies, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere for shoppers. Constructed in 1987 by Laing for Greycoat Shopping Plc, Eldon Garden boasts 42 shops spread across three floors and a convenient 477-space car park. Its development required careful consideration to incorporate the existing Three Bulls Heads pub. To achieve this, the pub was underpinned and supported while its roof was removed and rebuilt to ensure it remained structurally independent from the shopping centre. Eldon Garden is seamlessly linked to Eldon Square shopping centre through a two-storey glazed mall that bridges Percy Street. Interestingly, this connection had to be constructed overnight when the road could be closed temporarily. The photograph featured here is just a cropped version of its original form which appeared in Team Spirit, Laing's company newsletter back in March 1990. It beautifully encapsulates the unique charm and greenery that sets Eldon Garden apart as a premier retail destination within Newcastle upon Tyne.
