EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Eldon Square extension in all its glory. Located in Newcastle upon Tyne, this architectural masterpiece was built to bridge Blakett Street and connect the new extension to the original Eldon Square shopping centre. The project was undertaken by renowned construction company Laing, who secured a £5.2 million contract for the expansion. The photograph, featured in Team Spirit - Laing's company newsletter from January 1988, showcases the stunning evening lights that illuminate this bustling shopping hub of the 1980s. The building itself houses a retail unit for H&M, known as Hennes & Mauritz at that time. Laing's involvement with Eldon Square didn't stop there; they also took on additional contracts to improve and upgrade various areas across the entire site. Their dedication and expertise ensured that this iconic shopping centre remained at the forefront of modernity and convenience. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back to an era where fashion trends were born within these very walls. This photograph is not just a testament to architectural excellence but also serves as a nostalgic reminder of how our beloved cityscapes have evolved over time.
