Thames Barge Driving Race DP095299
Played In series: London. The Thames Barge Driving Race was set up in 1975 by a charity called The Transport On Water Association (TOW). The race consists of about 11 teams of between 4 and 8 members who steer and row 30 ton barges over a seven mile course from Greenwich to Westminster Bridge. Considerable skill is needed to pilot unpowered barges rowed under oars or sweeps and ride tidal river currents alone, up river. Lightermen moved freight along the Thames this way up until the 1930s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the exhilarating Thames Barge Driving Race, an annual event that has been a part of London's history since 1975. Organized by The Transport On Water Association (TOW), this charity race brings together around 11 teams, each consisting of 4 to 8 skilled members. Their mission? To navigate and row these massive, unpowered barges weighing a staggering 30 tons over a challenging seven-mile course from Greenwich to Westminster Bridge. The image showcases the sheer determination and expertise required to pilot these traditional vessels solely through oars or sweeps while battling against powerful tidal river currents. Once an essential method for transporting goods along the Thames until the 1930s, this race pays homage to the lightermen who once maneuvered freight in this very same manner. Derek Kendall's lens beautifully captures both the cityscape and river as a backdrop for this thrilling spectacle. As spectators line up along the banks, they witness firsthand how tradition meets modern athleticism on London's iconic waterway. This photograph serves as a testament to both the rich heritage of barge driving and its continued celebration within contemporary society. Through this image, we are reminded of London's deep connection with its historic past while embracing new traditions that honor those who came before us. It is truly a snapshot frozen in time that encapsulates both strength and grace on display during one of London's most cherished events - The Thames Barge Driving Race.
