EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time at the newly opened Sports Club centre at John Laing and Son Ltd's offices in Mill Hill, Greater London. The image showcases a woman crouching beside a record player in the coffee lounge, surrounded by the vibrant energy of the 1960s. The atmosphere is filled with excitement as membership of the Laing Sports Club had already reached an impressive 2,500 throughout the country by 1966. The new Sports Club wing, which opened on April 28th that year, boasted two floors of recreational bliss. With its billiards room, club rooms, sports shop, photographic studio, and offices - it was truly a haven for leisure enthusiasts. The coffee lounge itself exudes elegance and comfort with its stylish furniture and inviting ambiance. Folding doors separate this space from both the table tennis hall and TV lounge which could be transformed into a large meeting hall when needed. In this particular scene, our attention is drawn to the woman engrossed in her interaction with the record player. Perhaps she has chosen her favorite vinyl to play or is simply enjoying some peaceful solitude amidst all the activity surrounding her. This photograph not only immortalizes an era but also encapsulates the spirit of John Laing and Son Ltd - their commitment to providing exceptional facilities for their employees' well-being while fostering camaraderie through shared interests such as music.
