This print showcases the intricate and fascinating world of intestinal villi. These delicate finger-like projections, found on the lining of the small intestine, play a crucial role in food absorption within our bodies. Each villus is a complex structure housing a network of blood capillaries colored in vibrant red and blue, alongside a lymph vessel depicted in white. The tall columnar cells that cover the surface epithelium are responsible for absorbing nutrients from the passing food particles. As these nutrients are absorbed, they enter into the bloodstream through this intricate system of blood vessels present within each villus. At the base of these remarkable structures lie indentations known as Crypts of Lieberkuhn. These crypts serve as factories producing new cells that contribute to building up each individual villus. It is worth noting that while villi exist throughout our intestines, they reach their largest size and highest numbers in both duodenum and jejunum – two sections where most food absorption takes place.
