EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a remarkable piece of Japanese art titled "ÒÇÄþö╗µ£¼ÞÖ½µÆ░ÒÇÅ ÒÇîÒü▓ÒüÅÒéëÒüùÒÇì" (Artokoloro). Created during the Edo period between 1615 and 1868, this woodblock printed book is a true masterpiece. The image on display features an enchanting scene with two crawling creatures: the evening cicada, known as higurashi in Japanese, and a delicate spider called kumo. The picture book, known as "ehon mushi erami" was illustrated by Kitagawa Utamaro, a renowned Japanese artist who lived from 1753 to 1806. Published in 1788 by Tsutaya Jūzaburō, it contains fifteen designs showcasing various insects and garden creatures. This particular page captures the beauty of these small beings through intricate details brought to life using ink and vibrant colors on paper. Accompanying this stunning artwork are selected poems introduced by poet and scholar Yadoya Meshimori Rokujuen (1753–1830), whose preface adds depth to the visual experience. Utamaro's illustrations were highly influential within the Go Gawa poetry group at that time. Measuring approximately 10 1/2 x 7 7
