EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection captures a pivotal moment in the epic tale of Odysseus. Titled "Odysseus in the Palace of Circe" it portrays a scene filled with enchantment and transformation. On the right side, we see Mercury, messenger of the gods, extending an herb to Odysseus. This magical plant acts as an antidote to Circe's potion, which has turned his men into animals and pigs. With bravery and determination, Odysseus consumes the herb and proceeds towards Circe's palace. In the foreground on the left, Circe herself offers him another drink – her potent potion. However, to everyone's surprise, this elixir has no effect on our hero. Filled with compassion for his companions who have lost their human forms, he implores Circe to restore them. Circe grants his request but cunningly asks for one favor in return – that Odysseus spends a night with her before departing. This intriguing exchange takes place in the top right corner of this artwork. The artist skillfully depicts Ulysses' companions transformed into various creatures nearby while Mercury presents him with moly - a powerful countercharm against magic spells. Created by Theodoor van Thulden in Paris between 1632-1633 using paper engraving techniques, this print beautifully captures both the mythical elements and emotional depth of this iconic episode from Homer's Odyssey.
