Otus Bengalensis, Owls. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth

Otus Bengalensis, Owls. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite engraving titled "Otus Bengalensis, Owls. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains" created by Elizabeth and John Gould in 1831. John Gould, renowned as a taxidermist and bird-stuffer for the Zoological Society, developed an infatuation with avian species from the east during the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayas arrived at the society's museum. Driven by his passion, Gould conceived an ambitious project to publish a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty species and one hundred bird figures. To bring this vision to life, Elizabeth Gould meticulously crafted intricate drawings that were then transferred onto large lithographic stones known as "Gould plates". The resulting artwork is nothing short of breathtaking. This particular image captures an Asian owl species called Otus Bengalensis with its exotic tail feathers on full display against a stunning background. The attention to detail is remarkable; every feather intricately illustrated and hand-colored. Dating back to the early 19th century, this illustration represents not only a significant contribution to natural history but also serves as a testament to British artistry during that era. Its close-up perspective allows us to appreciate every minute marking and pattern adorning these majestic creatures. Preserved within books and manuscripts, these enchanting engravings continue to captivate audiences today through their timeless beauty and historical significance. Quint Lox's photograph perfectly encapsulates this masterpiece from the Liszt Collection while honoring its rich cultural heritage.
