1792 1865 Algernon Fourth Northumberland Percy

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Algernon Percy, the 4th Duke of Northumberland, in his naval uniform from the early 19th century. Born on October 13, 1792, Percy was not only a prominent member of the British aristocracy but also an accomplished naval commander. He served in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, a period of intense military conflict between France and the United Kingdom. The Duke's naval career began in 1805 when he joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman. He quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional bravery and leadership skills. In 1812, he was appointed as a post captain, and by 1815, he had reached the rank of rear-admiral. Despite his military successes, Percy is perhaps best known for his role in the Battle of Trafalgar, one of the most significant naval engagements in British history. He served under Admiral Lord Nelson on HMS Foudroyant, a 98-gun ship of the line. During the battle, Percy's cool-headedness and strategic acumen were instrumental in securing the British victory. After the war, Percy returned to his duties as the Duke of Northumberland, but he continued to serve in the navy in a reserve capacity. He was also an active patron of the arts and sciences, and he played a significant role in the development of Alnwick Castle, his family's ancestral home. This portrait, taken in the early 1800s, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable man who straddled the worlds of aristocracy and military service. With his piercing gaze and imposing presence, the Duke of Northumberland cuts an impressive figure, a testament to his military prowess and noble lineage.
