Anthony Frederick Wilding: The Unforgettable Tennis Champion and Brave Soldier This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic charm of Anthony Frederick Wilding, a New Zealand-born tennis player who dominated the sport during the early 20th century. Wilding's impressive tennis career saw him claim the Wimbledon Men's Championship title an unprecedented four years in a row from 1910 to 1913. His reign came to an abrupt end in 1914 when he was defeated by Australian Norman Brookes in straight sets. The image shows Wilding during a brief respite from the horrors of World War One, as a Lieutenant stationed in Paris. The photograph was taken in the Place Vendome, with Wilding seated confidently behind the wheel of his car, showcasing his expertise as a motorist. The year is 1915, and the carefree scene starkly contrasts with the impending doom that awaited Wilding and countless others on the battlefields of Europe. Tragically, Wilding's tennis prowess and military service were cut short when he lost his life on 9 May 1915 during the Battle of Aubers Ridge in France. This poignant photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Wilding's dual identity as a champion athlete and a brave soldier, who gave his all to both his country and his sport. This photograph is an invaluable piece of tennis and military history, offering a glimpse into the life of a remarkable man whose legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences to this day.
