1842 1876 1897 Abdul Abroad Deposed Eventually Gloves Hamid Sultan Ottoman

EDITORS COMMENTS
Abdul Hamid II (1842-1918), the 34th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, is depicted in this striking photograph taken in 1897. He ruled from 1876 until his deposition in 1909, a period marked by both military campaigns abroad and misgovernance at home. Abdul Hamid II wears the traditional Ottoman attire of a red fez adorned with gold embroidery and a white robe, completed with a pair of red gloves. The Sultan's military uniform, consisting of a blue tunic and trousers, is also visible underneath. This attire reflects his dual role as both a spiritual and temporal leader of the Ottoman Empire. During his reign, Abdul Hamid II led several military campaigns abroad, including the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 and the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913. However, his domestic policies were marked by authoritarianism and repression, leading to widespread discontent among the Ottoman population. In 1908, a revolution forced him to restore the Constitution and share power with a parliament, but he continued to manipulate the political situation behind the scenes. In 1909, a coup d'état led by the Young Turks finally deposed Abdul Hamid II and established the Ottoman Constitution Monarchy. He was exiled to Salonica, where he lived until his death in 1918. This photograph captures a moment in time during the final years of Abdul Hamid II's reign, showcasing his regal appearance and the grandeur of the Ottoman Empire. Despite his military successes abroad, his misgovernance at home ultimately led to his downfall and the end of the Ottoman Empire as it was known.
