Abdul Kerim Pasha: A Turkish Military Commander in the War of 1876 This evocative photograph captures the stern and resolute visage of Abdul Kerim Pasha, a prominent Turkish military figure during the late 19th century. Born in 1811, Abdul Kerim Pasha rose through the ranks of the Ottoman military to become a pasha, or governor, in the provinces of Eastern Rumelia and Bulgaria. He gained notable recognition during the Russo-Turkish War of 1876, a conflict that arose from tensions between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire over territorial disputes in the Balkans. During the war, Abdul Kerim Pasha led the defense of the fortress city of Plevna, which was under siege by Russian forces. The siege lasted for several months, and Abdul Kerim Pasha's tenacious leadership and strategic prowess earned him the admiration of his troops and the respect of his enemies. Despite ultimately being forced to surrender, the defense of Plevna became a symbol of Ottoman resistance and a source of national pride. After the war, Abdul Kerim Pasha continued to serve in various military and administrative roles, but he remained best known for his heroic defense of Plevna.
