Aboard the Sinking Vesris: A Moment of Desperation and Survival (1928, November 21) This haunting photograph captures the final moments before the tragic sinking of the Vesris, a passenger liner that went down in the North Atlantic on a stormy November night in 1928. Taken just seconds before the ship began to disintegrate, the image shows a chaotic scene on the deck as passengers, some wearing lifebelts, rush towards the lifeboats. The lifeboats, however, were few and far between, and many capsized in the rough seas, leaving people with no choice but to jump off the sharply sloping decks in order to save themselves. The Vesris, a relatively new and well-regarded liner, had set sail from Liverpool, England, bound for New York City with over 600 passengers and crew on board.
